User-centered and environmentally friendly product design development

A Swiss manufacturer of welding helmets was faced with the challenge of designing the next generation of its flagship product. The company approached Milani to conceptualize a product vision that would meet the current and future needs of its users. At the same time, the goal was to identify ecodesign measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions throughout the entire lifecycle.

By conducting user surveys in various application contexts, Milani identified customer needs for the next generation of welding helmets and developed three concepts for the welding helmet of the future. In addition to user needs, Milani also considered future technological possibilities, trends and differentiation opportunities from competitors.

Life cycle assessment for data-driven, sustainable product development

At the same time, Milani conducted a life cycle assessment to measure the environmental footprint of the current flagship product throughout its life cycle. For this purpose, Milani applied a pragmatic LCA screening optimized to the needs of the development and design department. Based on this data, Milani identified the most critical components that drive up the product's environmental footprint and showcase the greatest optimization potenial.

Ecodesign product concept with significant greenhouse gas reduction

Working closely with the welding helmet manufacturer, Milani designed several scenarios to reduce the environmental impact using eco-design strategies and measures. These ranged from small interventions in the design and choice of materials to the adaptation of the value chain. These scenarios were again measured through LCAs. Milani was thus able to illustrate which eco-design measures would have the greatest impact.

For the final product concepts, Milani combined the results of the user surveys, the trend analysis and the eco-design measures, and summarized the results on a technology roadmap. The result was a product design concept for the next generation of welding helmets that reduces CO2 emissions significantly and at the same time simplifies critical steps in the user's daily work. This direction is currently being pursued by the development team.
